The newspapers Folha de São Paulo, Extra, A Tarde and O Globo – has been suffering a new type of censorship. What was once done with fury by the military dictatorship, is now done by a group of people who follow a Church.
It all happened as a result of investigative reports written by a Folha reporter, who denounced some fiscal and administrative irregularities in companies owned by bishops of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (Iurd). Finally, the trigger came when the newspaper O Globo referred to the institution as a “sect”.
According to the Michaelis dictionary, the concept of “sect” is:
1 ant Any philosophical school, whose doctrines or methods Special Data differed from those generally followed. 2 Dissenting branch of an established church, and therefore considered heretical. 3 Rel Group within a main religious communion, whose adherents follow certain special teachings or practices. 4 Group of people who follow certain principles or doctrines, different from those generally accepted in their respective environment. 5 Theory of a famous professor, followed by many proselytes. 6 pop Band, faction, party.
Despite there being no pejorative meanings, Iurd faithful from all over Brazil filed suits in special courts to receive compensation for moral damages, as they felt they were victims of religious prejudice. According to the press, these actions (around 50) were designed by a leader, because, although the acts were carried out in different and isolated parts of the country, the wording of the papers was practically the same in all of them.
When the process takes place in a special court, the presence of the defendant is essential. In this case, it would be impossible for the Folha journalist to attend all the hearings that took place on the same day in different Brazilian cities (in more than 20 states), which would make this action an act of bad faith on the part of the faithful.
At least two actions gave a favorable opinion to the press, considering that the faithful had no legitimacy in their arguments, as the reports did not deal with any specific member of the Church but rather the institution itself.
